It Started with a Sandwich

In 2012, our friend and respected restaurateur Michael Shemtov sought to open a craft sandwich shop in the rich culinary city of Charleston, SC. His idea was to use the very best ingredients and preparation techniques usually reserved for fine dining to make an accessible comfort food–the sandwich. We worked closely with Michael as partners and collaborators to develop a brand experience that would stand out in one of the most popular culinary destinations on the east coast, while capturing the unique spirit of the concept.

A Brand for Foodies and Friends

We started with the positioning and core messaging, establishing the fundamentals of how the brand would tell its story. The restaurant experience was shaped by its commitment to an ever-changing menu based on seasonally-relevant ingredients, with a focus on locally-sourced produce and protein. So in developing the name and visual identity, we aimed to represent the simplicity and source of every ingredient, while also reflecting the communal nature of the restaurant. With its long reclaimed wood tables and shared plates, we hoped to make Butcher & Bee a regular destination for foodies and friends.

Mode’s work is both beautiful & technically perfect. Years after opening, I continue to hear praise for our brand.”
